Field Trip to Perry Mesa

“A Perry Mesa Pit House Village”

Thursday, November 13, 2014

8:30 AM at the Agua Fria National. Monument. Kiosk

We are meeting at the kiosk for the Agua Fria National Monument just east of I-17 on the Bloody Basin Rd.  Plan on being there by 8:30 am. You must be a member of AAS to attend and Desert Foothills Chapter Members have priority.  Contact Larry Morehouse at mas00casa@gmail.com 623.776.6700.  Please do not sign up if you are NOT certain you can participate.  If you must cancel, please let Larry know ASAP because slots for the trip are very limited.

The trip requires high clearance vehicles and 4-wheel drive is a plus, especially if we run into mud.  Larry wants to match participants with others, so as many as possible can carpool.

Dress for cool, windy weather and rough terrain on Perry Mesa.  Bring lunch, snacks, water and hiking stick(s).

The mapped village area appears to be approximately 200 x 200 meters and the forest road goes right through the middle, so there isn't excessive hiking.  There ARE a lot of trash middens, a few field houses, a couple of petroglyphs, at least one slag roaster and some artifact scatters.

Scott Wood is our archaeologist leader for this visitation and provides explanations or interpretations for what we are looking at.  If time and weather permits, we may visit a second ruin: Big Rosalie complex.
