Join the Desert Foothills Chapter for a two night trip with Evelyn Billo and Robert Mark to Sears Point. Sears Point Archaeological District is an outstanding area with thousands of petroglyphs and other features such as rock alignments and a historic canal. There is a possibility that BLM archaeologist, Thomas K. Jones will join us.
ITINERARY:
We will meet in Gila Bend at the Space Age Lodge Restaurant at 9:00 am on Monday, October 6, 2014 and proceed to the Howard Wells site which is about an hour beyond Gila Bend. We return that evening to Gila Bend to spend the night. On Tuesday, October 7, 2014 we leave at 8:00 am from the same location for travel to the Sears Point site. We plan to leave Sears Point around 4:00 pm on Tuesday, so we should be back in Gila Bend by 5:00 pm. At that time, you can head home or spend the night again in Gila Bend that is your decision. There is a great deal to see which involves serious hiking both extensive and moderate.
Please read the following before making the decision:
We are hiking some on valley trails, but most of the petroglyphs features involve hiking on talus slopes of basalt mesas with loose weathered gravel on slight to steep inclines. This is not just a car trip, as we are hiking, walking, and climbing. Please be in good health and able to hike. Please consider it could be hot/cold/windy/etc on any given day or time. IF you have any health issues or cannot hike at a moderate speed. Please do not sign up. Also, communications within the hotel and area may be isolated without room telephone, cell phone, or WI-FI. The trip leaders have radios, but the terrain is such that they cannot always stay in contact. Other potential hazards include rattlesnakes and bees.
SUVs are fine, so unless there is a bad monsoon season that washes out roads any higher clearance vehicle should be OK (except street cars). There are rocky and sandy stretches.
Hotel or camping reservations, transportation, food, fees, etc. are your responsibility.
